FAQs

Which destination is likely to provide the best values next year?

I think Australia is the destination that will provide the best mix of pleasure and safety. As demonstrated by their heavy advertising, the Aussie's  seemed determined to win back the tourists who delayed visits, first due to the wildfires and then to Covid-19.

We see them reducing prices, encouraging tourists to explore more than Sydney and Melbourne, and stressing the safety that their sparse  population and welcoming citizenry provides. Australia and New Zealand acted more decisively than Americans or Europeans in combatting Covid-19 and we expect them to reap the benefits of their actions. Now the question is, "When will they permit us to visit?"

What is the best source of advice on the different cruise lines?

The book that's alway at my elbow is Berlitz Cruising & Cruise Ships by Douglas Ward. It contains data and descriptions of every cruise ship and cruise line that is sold in the U.S. market. The 2020 edition is a 760-page paperback that sells for less than $25, sometimes with a free online version.

Aside from the book, you can usually trust an experienced travel advisor who has traveled to the destinations you're considering on the same cruise lines in which you're interested.

Which are the top-rated cruise lines?

My nine top picks for the finest cruise lines are Seabourn, Silversea, Crystal, Regent, Viking Ocean, Ponant, Oceania, Azamara and Windstar.

All of the ships managed by these cruise lines carry fewer than 1300 guests. Not only are these ships among the friendliest and most luxurious, but we expect them to be able to include Covid-19 mitigations, such as converting large dining rooms and buffets to small specialty restaurants, more quickly than their larger kin.

About

About
Some of my happiest moments have been on "small ships" with less than 1300 guests. My wife and I have sailed on most of the Seabourn,  Silversea, Crystal, Azamara, Oceania, Regent, and Windstar ships on more than 40 cruises. Our favorites are "repositioning cruises" going from one continent to another; and voyages to Australia, Japan, Southeast Asia, Alaska, Scandinavia, and the Med. We've taken photos and enjoyed restaurants in more than 60 nations.

My company is Cruises & Cameras, LLC that partners with LUXE Travel, a FROSCH Company, and the Signature Travel Network. I'm a Signature Travel Expert. Before I was a travel advisor, I used my doctorate to help school districts and colleges with strategic planning. Since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, I have earned two certificates in epidemiology taught by Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health. Although I'm not a physician, I’m using what I've learned to help my clients deal with the realities of the pandemic. My most recent book is "How to Plan Your Next & BEST Cruise" (Amazon, 2019, 186 pages). I also write a weekly column for TRO Travelgram, one of the most widely-read newsletters and blogs in the travel industry.
